There are many things I continue to practice. One is the idea of the beginner’s mind. This child’s gaze reminds me of this… of the wonderment of it all.

I am designing an album for the Parents of the Groom. It is always interesting to create an album and to work with my clients on the layout. I start by designing about half the book, then show the client a PDF of the pages. These pages are the jumping off point. I have been using the camera on my Iphone more and more. I never went to the ‘dark side’ and used camera phones much. They were always small, pixelly things at best to keep an image on your phone only when someone wanted to see a picture of Leo. Now, however, I have turned and stared into the inky void directly… the black magic of the toy camera. There are so many photo apps for the Iphone that allows you to make images that equal (or at least are close to) the holga and diana toy camera movement. Here is a list of a few photo apps I use: tiltshiftgen, Mill colour, filterFX and OldCamera. The images that follow are straight from my phone.

In photography, like life, we are faced with choices. Taking the photo entails compositional choices, timing and a host of technical choices, just being where you are is the outcome of choices. One of the biggest decisions I make is: color or black and white. After that choice comes a slew of other processing choices. But, lest I get off track, I want to give an example of an image I took this morning while starting my day. It is the Fall season here in San Francisco, at least in front of my house (inside it is Chanukah and Christmas). While sweeping up the leaves I saw a familiar and rare thing.
